TCFF 2024 Spotlight: The Ballad of a Hustler
2024 marks 15 years of the Twin Cities Film Fest, which runs October 17-26 at the Marcus West End Cinema at the Shops at West End in St. Louis Park.
Nearly 150 films – including features, shorts, animation, and documentaries – will screen over the course of the festival, both in-person and online (through TCFF’s Streams platform). Additionally, directors, producers, and actors will walk the red carpet, present their films, and take part in Q&As and discussions about their work.
Over the course of TCFF 2024, we’ll be chatting with some of those filmmakers and stars to find out more about what they’re bringing to the TCFF screens.

The strategy for plotting my Twin Cities Film Fest scheduled has changed since it added its streaming platform. I used to anchor my schedule with shorts blocks, but now I seek out indie narratives that are only in person and build from there. The very first one to catch my attention this year was “The Ballad of a Hustler.” The premise drew me in, the trailer hooked me, and the fact that Robin Lord Taylor (“Gotham”) is in the cast is just a nice bonus. Prior to its Saturday screening, screenwriter and star Bernardo Barreto shared some additional details about the film.
Q: Tell us a little bit about your film.
“The Ballad of a Hustler” is a new feature film directed by the award-winning filmmaker Heitor Dhalia, whose previous works have premiered at prestigious festivals such as Sundance and Cannes.
The film is a gritty, character-driven drama-thriller that delves into themes of immigration, ambition, and identity, portraying the struggles of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. and the elusive nature of the American Dream.
Q: Now tell us something about it that we might not be able to glean from the trailer or description.
One aspect that may not be immediately apparent from the trailer is the reflection of contemporary society. And also that each character brings a unique perspective to the immigrant experience.
Q: If someone is only going to see one film at the Twin Cities Film Fest, why should it be this one?
“The Ballad of a Hustler” is not only an entertaining thriller but also an emotional journey that offers audiences an authentic glimpse into the lives of immigrants. This film stands out as a powerful exploration of themes that are highly relevant today, particularly in light of ongoing debates about immigration and identity. It’s more than just a film; it’s a conversation starter about the human experience in the face of adversity. By choosing this film, viewers can engage with a story that challenges stereotypes and promotes dialogue about crucial social issues, all while being captivated by its thrilling narrative.
Q: Prior to TCFF, where has the film screened, and what has the response been so far?
Before the Twin Cities Film Fest, “The Ballad of a Hustler” had its World Premiere at the 25th Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival (Festival do Rio) and was later screened at the São Paulo International Film Festival. Our U.S. Premiere took place this year at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and we recently won the Best Dramatic Feature Award at the Arizona International Film Festival.
The film has been incredibly well-received by audiences, generating positive and enthusiastic reactions at every screening. Having been involved with many other films, I know this kind of consistent response is not the norm.
Q: What was it that drew you to submit your film for the Twin Cities Film Fest?
We were drawn to the Twin Cities Film Fest because of its unwavering commitment to cinema, particularly in showcasing diverse voices and thought-provoking narratives. We believe that “The Ballad of a Hustler” aligns perfectly with the festival's mission to highlight films that foster understanding and awareness, ultimately shaping society and inspiring individual change.
The festival serves as an exceptional platform for independent filmmakers to connect with audiences who are passionate about the art of cinema and eager to engage with meaningful stories.
Q: What’s next for your film after this festival?
This may be our final festival appearance. We are hopeful about releasing the film next year in theaters around the world before it becomes available for streaming.
